About Kisumu
Kisumu, also called Kisumu Dala (meaning "Kisumu, home"), is the third-largest city in Kenya and the largest city in the western region. It is a major port city on the shores of Lake Victoria, serving as a commercial and transportation hub for Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Rwanda, and beyond. Kisumu is the capital of Kisumu County and was once the headquarters of the former Nyanza Province. It is known for its rich Luo culture, scenic landscapes, and vibrant economy.
History
1890s
Kisumu was originally known as "Sumo".
1898
Arrival of British Colonial. The British colonial government identified Kisumu as a strategic location for trade and transportation.
1901
Kisumu becomes a Railway Terminus. The Uganda Railway (now Kenya Railways) reached Kisumu, making it the first inland port on Lake Victoria.
1905
The name changes from 'Sumo' to 'Kisumu'. The British administration restored the name "Kisumu," reflecting its indigenous roots.
1963
Kenya gains Independence, Kisumu played a significant role in Kenya’s independence struggle, with leaders like Jaramogi Oginga Odinga advocating for self-rule.
1969
Kisumu Massaccer, Political tensions escalated between President Jomo Kenyatta and Jaramogi Oginga Odinga, leading to a tragic event at Kisumu Hospital.
2001
Kisumu became a city, The government officially granted Kisumu city status due to its growth in infrastructure and economy.
